Roundtable on Deforestation-free Global Value Chains” – Producing countries considerations to deforestation-free products: The state of play in soy, cocoa, and coffee sectors

The first roundtable took place on 29 March 2022 and investigated the state of play in producing countries to better understand the specific challenges and priorities around deforestation

Fighting against global deforestation and forest degradation at the international level has become a worldwide priority, and the European Union is developing a proposal for a new regulation on “deforestation-free” products. In this context, ITC is convening four rounds of private-public consultations and developing concrete plans of action for “Deforestation-free Global Value Chains” in priority commodities sectors, such as soy, cocoa, and coffee.

The first roundtable took place on 29 March 2022 and investigated the state of play in producing countries to better understand the specific challenges and priorities around deforestation: Jason Clay (World Wildlife Fund) gave a keynote speech about this sensitive topic, followed by interventions from high-level speakers from Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Viet nam. The event was attended by over 150 participants. Later sessions are scheduled in May, June, and September and will explore the wider value chain opportunities and different stakeholder voices.
